Objectives of the new regulation

A new regulation of boat speed in the marine reserves of Sa Dragonera and the Ponent Islands of Mallorca will come into force in 2025. This measure, pioneering in the Balearic Islands, responds to a growing demand from local and sector stakeholders to reduce the impact of maritime traffic on biodiversity, fishing resources and safety at sea.

Protection of marine biodiversity

Reducing speed helps minimize the impact of noise pollution on marine wildlife and marine habitats.

Marine reserves of fishing interest

The regulation seeks to ensure the regeneration of fishing resources and the survival of the artisanal fishing sector.

Improved navigation safety

Establishing limits of 10 knots (and 6 knots in more protected areas) increases safety for all sea users.

Reducing environmental impact

Sailing slow #pocapoc reduces the risk of collision with marine fauna and the erosion of habitats due to the waves caused by wakes.

Promotion of responsible tourism

Reducing speed facilitates access to Sa Dragonera by less impactful means, such as kayaking or paddle surfing, promoting a more sustainable relationship with the area.
